Tangible Sound

The augmented reality installation „Tangible Sound“ displays physical models through an interactive visual interface. The models consisting of single or multiple strings or membranes can be observed with an iPad and are displayed to be virtually situated above a marker which synchronizes all instances of iPads directed at these models. This technique of AR display enables visitors to experience the display of a model in all three dimensions, from all directions, above and below, and conveys additional information of the movements that the model performs. The sound is displayed through an external speaker so that no headphones are needed. This installation aims at giving a physical embodiment to an abstract model, thus enhancing the tangibility of physical models specifically for a non-expert audience.
